green cleaning

Green cleaning
products are mostly non-toxic, biodegradable, and made from renewable resources,  cleaning techniques and products avoid the use of chemically reactive and toxic cleaning products which contain various toxic chemicals, some of which emit volatile organic compounds causing respiratory and dermatological problems!
cleaners made from things you are likely to find in your cupboard. Some white vinegar, lemon, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and olive oil is all you need to get your home spic-and-span!

BathroomTo clean bathroom tiles, use some vinegar diluted with water, and rub them with a brush or sponge.
For the sink and water faucets, use a spray filled with pure vinegar. Spray it on the surfaces and leave it for a while, then wipe away with a clean cloth. If the lime or calcium buildup is very persistent, use paper towels drenched in vinegar and cover the sink and faucet with it. Leave it overnight; the next day you will have a shiny, new-looking sink and faucet.
To get streak-free mirrors and windows, spray some pure vinegar on them and dry with an old, crumpled newspaper.
Toilet bowls can also be perfectly cleaned with vinegar and baking soda. Pour some vinegar in the bowl and let it soak for 30 minutes. Then, sprinkle some baking soda on the toilet brush and scour the bowl with it. The result: a perfectly clean toilet.

KitchenVinegar is also a very useful cleaning agent in the kitchen. To clean the counter and cupboards, use one cup of vinegar and three cups of water. This will perfectly disinfect the counter.
To remove smells from the fridge, fill a small cup with vinegar or baking soda dissolved in water and put it in the fridge. It will absorb any bad odor effectively.
The oven and microwave are often difficult to clean. However, with this easy trick, you won’t have to scrub hard anymore. Make a paste with equal amounts of baking soda and water, and apply it with a sponge all over the oven or microwave. Leave it for one night: the next morning you will be able to easily remove the dirt with a clean, wet sponge. Another way to clean built-up grease is to place a heatproof cup with water and lemon juice in the oven. Heat the oven and leave it for a while to let the lemon juice evaporate. The lemon dissolves the grease, making it a piece of cake to wipe it clean afterwards.
A slow drain can be loosened by pouring half a cup of baking soda down it, then boil a cup of vinegar and pour it down the drain as well.

Living roomSimilarly to cleaning bathroom tiles and the kitchen counter, a mix of water and vinegar works great for mopping vinyl, laminate and ceramic floors. If you are not a fan of a vinegar smell all over the house, add some essential oil of your choice to your homemade cleaning product. Tea tree oil, for instance, is known for its antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic qualities, making it ideal for cleaning. For wooden floors or furniture, add some olive oil to the bucket to polish them to perfection. If the idea of not using any soap puts you off, use some liquid Castile soap, which is vegetable-based and not made with animal fat, as soaps normally are.
Stains or bad odors on the carpet can easily be removed by sprinkling some baking soda, cornmeal, or a combination of the two on them. Leave it in for a couple of hours and vacuum.
Dust is omnipresent in our part of the world, so dusting the house is a very important part of getting it clean. Use a damp rag rather than a very wet one, as this will hold the dust better. Soak it in equal amounts of water and vinegar and some drops of lemon and essential oil for a nice scent. Wring it out and start cleaning.
Many people worry that natural cleaning products are not as powerful as the concoctions sold in supermarkets. In fact, chemical cleaning products that kill all bacteria — including the good ones — are a threat to the world, as they contribute to the creation of drug resistant bacteria. Besides that, our germophobia may have led to the increase in the occurrence of asthma among children.
To prevent the spread of microorganisms, it is sufficient to soak cleaning sponges and cloths in a pot with boiling water after using them.

HEALTHY BABY FOOD

HEALTHY BABY FOODS

SquashSquash is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, is naturally sweet, and has a pleasing, creamy texture.
Serving idea: Sprinkle parmesan cheese and a little chili seasoning on half a squash, roast it, and scoop out a serving for your baby, suggests pediatrician Susanna Block, owner of World Baby Foods, an ethnic baby food line. "Cooked squash with a little cilantro, mild chiles, and garbanzo beans are another great combination," she says.

LentilsCrammed with protein and fiber, lentils pack a powerful nutritional punch. They're also one of the cheapest healthy foods you can buy.
Serving idea: Combine cooked lentils with mixed vegetables, rice, and seasonings of your choice. "Try basil and oregano," suggests dietitian Karin Hosenfeld of North Dallas Nutrition. "Or toss in a bay leaf, which works really well with lentils." (Remove the bay leaf before serving.)

Dark green leafy vegetablesLeafy greens boast high amounts of iron and folate. While spinach is perhaps the best known of this group, there are many other varieties, including kale, chard, and collard greens.
Serving idea: Steam and puree a batch of greens, then mix with iron-fortified cereal to give your baby a double dose of iron. Experiment with the proportions to see what your baby likes; Hosenfeld suggests starting with two parts veggie to one part cereal.

BroccoliBrimming with folate, fiber, and calcium, broccoli is also known for its cancer-fighting properties, says dietitian Kate Geagan, author of Go Green, Get Lean. And thanks to its sulfur compounds, it has a unique flavor that can help expand your baby's tastes.
Serving idea: Steam pieces until soft, then chill. "Steaming takes the bite out of broccoli," says Hosenfeld. "And chilled broccoli is sometimes better accepted by babies. It can also be soothing during teething."

BlueberriesThe deep, brilliant blue of these berries comes from flavonoids called anthocyanins, which are good for your baby's eyes, brain, and even urinary tract, says Stephen Gass, co-author of Mix and Mash: Adventures in the Kitchen for Baby and You.
Serving Idea: Gass suggests this easy blueberry soup: Combine 1 cup of blueberries with one-quarter cup of water in a bowl, microwave for one minute, and let cool. Then swirl some plain yogurt on top.

Avocados"Avocados are a rich source of unsaturated fats," says nutritionist Leanne Cooper, author of What Do I Feed My Baby: A Step-by-Step Guide to Solids. "In fact, the fat composition is somewhat similar to that of breast milk." Concerned about your baby eating fatty food? Don't be. "Unsaturated fat is the good kind of fat, and babies need it for brain development," says pediatrician Ari Brown, co-author of Baby 411: Clear Answers and Smart Advice for Your Baby's First Year.
Serving idea: Try combining mashed avocado with other foods, such as cream cheese, apples, or canned fish, suggests Cooper. And when it's playgroup time, ditch the crackers and take an avocado along instead. "Avocados can travel in your bag at room temperature and you can offer them in slivers or spread on toast fingers while you sip coffee with your friends," she says.

MeatMany of us don't think of meat as a typical baby food, but it's one of Brown's top choices. "Meat is a great source of zinc and iron," she explains.
Serving idea: Cook stew! "Stew is the ideal baby food – easy to make, easy to chew, and endless in its variety," says Matthew Amster-Burton, author of Hungry Monkey: A Food-Loving Father's Quest to Raise an Adventurous Eater. Experiment with adding different veggies and seasonings, such as ginger and parsley. And the best part? Tough, cheap meats (like chuck) work best, says Amster-Burton, whose own family dines on stew almost weekly. Just be sure to cook the stew long enough for the meat to turn soft and scrumptious.

PrunesPrunes have lots of fiber and can help relieve constipation – which, notes Brown, your baby may experience after you introduce solids.
Serving idea: Puree prunes and serve them straight or mixed with other foods, such as cereal or applesauce, for a naturally sweet treat. If your baby is badly constipated, Brown advises adding a teaspoon or two of prune juice to formula or expressed breast milk.

Garbanzo beansLike lentils and other beans, garbanzos are rich in protein and fiber, says Geagan. They're also inexpensive and versatile.
Serving idea: Try hummus. You can find it in many grocery stores, or make your own by pureeing cooked garbanzo beans with garlic, lemon, olive oil, and tahini. You can also make a delectable finger food by sautéing or roasting the beans. "I have a 19-month-old daughter who loves chickpeas sautéed in a pan with seasonings and left out for her to munch," says mom Christina DeLuca.

Mandarin orangesHigh in vitamin C and antioxidants, mandarin oranges are a supreme finger food. "Babies really love the flavor," says Hosenfeld.
Serving idea: This is a particularly easy one to prepare – just cut the segments into bite-size pieces and serve. You can buy mandarin oranges fresh or canned, but make sure the canned version is packed in water, not syrup, which contains added sugar

White potatoes
The nutritional value of White Potatoes is really not all that high. While white potatoes have respectable amounts of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, as well as potassium, their starch component is high. Carbohydrates account for 252 calories in a 1 baked white potato.
Serving idea:
Boil, steam or bake white potatoes until tender.
Puree or mash as needed, adding water to thin if required.
Add steamed broccoli and mix to combine

Bananas: bananas are another great first food for your baby. Research indicates that bananas and their mucosal properties actually help coat the tummy and help aid in digestion. Bananas are sweet, which may help baby more readily accept the first food experience.  banana rich in Vitamins A, C, Folate
Minerals: Potassium, Phosphorus, Selenium, Magnesium, Calcium.

Serving idea:  Peel a ripe banana - do not cook
Place banana in a food processor/food mill or blender and puree
You can also mash the banana in a bowl using a regular fork – heat in microwave for 25 seconds prior to mashing for extra softness
Add formula/breast milk or water to thin or add cereal (if desired) to thicken up.

Example feeding "schedule" of solid foods
1 ounce equals approximately 2 tablespoons

4-6 Months:
Always offer solids after bottle or breast. Baby may eat anywhere from 1-3 tablespoons of food at 1 or 2 "meals"
6-8 Months:
Formula and/or Breast Milk is still most important at this age and stage. Babies in this range may be just starting solids so the above for 4-6 Months would apply. Some babies may be eating up to 8 ounces of solid foods between 2-3 "meals" during a day.

8 Months and on:
Many babies will be eating 3 "meals" per day at this stage; including a grain, fruit, veggie and a meat or protein source such as eggs.

Garbage Can Health Boosters

                                                 Garbage Can Health Boosters

Are you throwing away the healthiest parts of your foods?

Everyone knows that eating fruits and vegetables can keep you healthy. But what about the parts you discard? Sometimes, the parts of foods that you don’t eat have the most health benefits. Here are three health-boosting surprises that will make you think twice before tossing rinds or skins. And, most importantly, we tell you how to incorporate these normally inedible substances into your daily diet.

Watermelon Rinds for Heart Health

Juicy watermelon rinds offer a high dose of cirulline amino acid – which helps dilate blood vessels, improving blood circulation. The easiest way to take advantage of watermelon rind health benefits is to blend a whole piece of watermelon with lime. If you’re in the mood for something with a little kick, add some gin or vodka to make it a heart-healthy cocktail.

Celery Tops for Diabetes Prevention

Celery is a good source of magnesium, but the leaves actually have more magnesium than the stalks. A higher magnesium intake has been shown to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 23%. To use celery tops, try finally chopping them up with parsley and stir it into a salsa.

Onion Skins for Stroke Prevention

While onions are a good source for antioxidants, the skin actually has more antioxidants than the onion itself. It’s also rich in quercetin – a flavonol that can reduce blood pressure and prevent arterial plaque that can cause stroke. Simmer onion skins in soups for additional flavor, and discard them before serving.

10 health benefits of beer

DRINK MODERATELY...!!
10 SUPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEER
Beer drinkers rejoice: Your favorite brew may be healthier than you think.
... For years, wine drinkers have indulged without guilt, reveling in the news that red wine can help protect against heart disease. Recent research shows that beer can also be good for what ails you, from reducing risk for broken bones to helping warding off diabetes and mental decline. It can even increase longevity, a large study suggests.
However, the key to tapping into beer’s benefits is moderation, meaning just one 12-ounce beer per day for women and two for men. Heavy drinking ups the threat of liver damage, some cancers, and heart problems. Bingeing on brewskis can also make you fat, since a 12-ounce regular beer has about 150 calories, while light beer has about 100.
Here are 10 surprising and healthy reasons to cheer about your next beer.

1. Stronger Bones
Beer contains high levels of silicon, which is linked to bone health.
For the best bone-building benefits, reach for pale ale, since a 2010 study of 100 types of beer from around the word identified these brews as richest in silicon, while light lagers and non-alcoholic beers contained the least.

2. A Stronger Heart
A beer or two a day can help raise levels of HDL, the “good” cholesterol that helps keep arteries from getting clogged.

3. Boosting Brain Health
A beer a day may help keep Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia at bay, researchers say.

4. Reduced Cancer Risk
A Portuguese study found that marinating steak in beer eliminates almost 70 percent of the carcinogens, called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) produced when the meat is pan-fried. Researchers theorize that beer’s sugars help block HCAs from forming.
Scientists also have found that beer and wine contain about the same levels of antioxidants, but the antioxidants are different because the flavonoids found in hops and grapes are different.

5. Healthier Kidneys
A study in Finland singled out beer among other alcoholic drinks, finding that each bottle of beer men drank daily lowered their risk of developing kidney stones by 40 percent. One theory is that beer’s high water content helped keep kidneys working, since dehydration increases kidney stone risk.
It’s also possible that the hops in beer help curb leeching of calcium from bones; that “lost” calcium also could end up in the kidneys as stones.

6. Boosting Vitamin Levels
A Dutch study, performed at the TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute, found that beer-drinking participants had 30 percent higher levels of vitamin B6 levels in their blood than their non-drinking counterparts, and twice as much as wine drinkers. Beer also contains vitamin B12 and folic acid.

7. Guarding Against Stroke
Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found that moderate amounts of alcohol, including beer, help prevent blood clots that block blood flow to the heart, neck and brain the clots that cause ischemic stroke, the most common type.

8. Lower Blood Pressure
Wine is fine for your heart, but beer may be even better: A Harvard study of 70,000 women ages 25 to 40 found that moderate beer drinkers were less likely to develop high blood pressure a major risk factor for heart attack than women who sipped wine or spirits.

9. Reduced Risk for Diabetes
Drink up: A 2011 Harvard study of about 38,000 middle-aged men found that when those who only drank occasionally raised their alcohol intake to one to two beers or other drinks daily, their risk of developing type 2 diabetes dropped by 25 percent. The researchers found no benefit to quaffing more than two drinks. The researchers found that alcohol increases insulin sensitivity, thus helping protect against diabetes.

10. Longer Life
In a 2005 review of 50 studies, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that moderate drinkers live longer. The USDA also estimates that moderate drinking prevents about 26,000 deaths a year, due to lower rates of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
These benefits appear to apply in other countries as well, with an earlier study reporting that, “if European beer drinkers stopped imbibing, there would be a decrease in life expectancy of two years and much unhappiness.”

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS
1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level.
This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.

3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain.

7. Oatmeal
8. Beans

12. Chocolate go for super dark, fair-trade, pure organic chocolate, not the sugary, processed milk chocolate candy bars.
13. Oysters
14. Olive Oil
15. Tuna
16. Garlic
17. Eggs  choose organic, free range, vegetarian fed eggs.
18. Green Leafy Vegetables
19. Tomatoes
20. Cacao nibs
Things that drain your brain:
Alcohol kills your brain cells outright! Alcohol also interferes with dopamine production. Moderate amounts of alcohol, particularly resveratrol-rich red wine, can help improve your health, but anything beyond a glass or two of wine daily is a recipe for reduced brain function and energy loss.

Corn Syrup and Sugar lead to health problems like diabetes and obesity, and they’re terrible for your brain. Don’t eat sugar except on special occasions or as an infrequent treat. If you can’t cut back that much, try to limit yourself to just two bites of whatever tempts you daily.

Nicotine constricts blood flow to the brain, so while it may “soothe” jittery nerves, smoking will actally reduce your brain function severely – and the effects are cumulative.

A high carbohydrate lunch will make you sleepy and sluggish. Opt for a light meal with some quality protein, such as a salad with grilled chicken breast or vegetables and hummus or wild American shrimp and avocado.

1. Maintain a healthy body weight and lifestyle: Exercise aerobically four times a week for 30 to 40 minutes; eat lots of fruits, vegetables and high-fiber foods.

2. Avoid fats, especially saturated fats found in meat, butter and beef shortening.

3. Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure makes the heart and blood vessels work harder. (See "How to Prevent Hypertension.") Treat high blood pressure as recommended by your doctor.

4. Check your cholesterol. Most malls and many senior centers offer cholesterol tests for a nominal fee.

5. Test your blood sugar. Chronic high blood sugar is harmful to the arteries. Free blood sugar testing is often offered at pharmacies.

6. Ask your doctor to check your blood hematocrit level. High hematocrits make a person more prone to strokes.

7. Stop smoking if you do. Nicotine causes the blood vessels to narrow and constrict, which impedes circulation.

8. Reduce or eliminate drug and alcohol intake. Abuse of either can cause strokes in teenagers and young adults.

9. Avoid constipation. Straining to move your bowels is hard on your heart and blood vessels.

10. Reduce your stress. Chronic stress causes the blood vessels to narrow, which makes blood pressure rise and the heart work harder.

11. Relax. Take a yoga class, read a good book to your loved one, pray, meditate or do whatever else relaxes you and increases your sense of well-being.

12. Take an aspirin every other day unless otherwise advised by your doctor. Aspirin helps your blood flow more easily.
